MARBLE CITY Hawks women’s basketball team gets a baptism of fire the Basketball Ireland Women’s Super League this weekend.

Their first fixture is against powerhouses, Ambassador UCC Glanmire.

Hawks were promoted from the Basketball Ireland Women’s Division One at the end of the 2017/’18 season, following a superb run.

They are relishing their first appearance in the Super League, but know that big challenges lie ahead.

“We’re looking forward to the Super League where we’ll play against the best players and coaches in Ireland,” said head coach Julian O’Keeffe ahead of Sunday’s showdown in Cork.

“This is a massive challenge for us to open our season against last year’s Super League champions. It will be a very hard game but one we are looking forward to.”

Hawks have much of the same roster as last season, with a new addition from the USA, Mia Hopkins, while local players Fiona Whitley and Ava Coogan have also come into the squad.

The team was busy preparing for the season at the weekend as it competed at a pre-season tournament in IT Carlow, which saw them win the Plate with wins over Super League teams Maxol WIT Wildcats and hosts, IT Carlow.

Throw in on Sunday is  at 1.30pm at the Mardyke Arena UCC, Cork.
