IT WAS a magnificent milestone match.
A soccer challenge between sporting neighbours Deen Celtic Football Club and Erin’s Own GAA Club was a first in the North Kilkenny town.
Both clubs enjoy the respect and admiration of their local community and peripherals.
As a fundraising cousin of the brilliant Castlecomer Wellie Race, that helps the great work of so many local charities, the GAA and soccer men pooled their resources, worked in tandem and raised €500 for the Castlecomer Day Care Centre.
For the record the soccer boys shaded the honours on a 3-2 scoreline.
But the real winners was the local centre that does such brilliant work for the men and women of the former mining town.
And the suggestion is that a re-match could again provide a boost for another local charity.
When it comes to doing the right thing for their town, their players and supporters, and local charities, these clubs are certainly on the ball.
