Father and son on the ball

Off to Chine: Kilkenny’s Stephen Bateman, centre, who will represent his country in China

A FATHER and son have made billiards and snooker history in the Republic of Ireland.

Stephen Bateman from the Kilkenny Shed won the National U21 Snooker Championships.

His dad James had already won the National Intermediate Billiards title.

It is the first time in the history of the Republic of Ireland Billiards & Snooker Association that this has happened.

In the final Stephen beat Aaron Hill from the Crucible SC, Cork with a superb 59 break in the decider to win 4-3 in a superb final and win his first national junior title for the talented Kilkenny cueist.

Both players will represent RIBSA at the World IBSF Championships in China.

Stephen plays Ronnie O’Sullivan in an exhibition game at Lyrath Estate tomorrow, Thursday.
