AS THE world waited for Meghan Markle to emerge from her car in Windsor, eight teams descended on Gowran to compete in the inaugural U12 blitz in Castle Ellis.

Proceedings started at 9.45am with a parade of the teams led by an uilinn piper.

Once Amhráin na bhFiann was played…the games began.

Each team played three games and this decided who played in the Shield and Cup Finals.

The shield was contested by Rower-Inistioge and Clara. Clara proved too strong and emerged clear winners.

The cup final between Piltown and home team, Gowran was a close game.

Tit-for-tat throughout, Gowran edged out to win by two points on a scoreline of 0-4 to 0-2.

Well done to all teams who competed, referees, linesman, tally-man, co-ordinator, chefs on the barbeque, shop-keepers, tea and coffee brewers, sandwich makers, bakers and all who made this tournament such a success.

This year’s tournament was in honour of James Byrne.

His wife Teresa made the presentations and it was an emotional moment when she presented her grandson Jake with the Cup.
