RECENT weeks have seen the roll-out of the next phase of Inistioge’s preparations for its participation in the Entente Florale competition. Bad weather had very negative impact on planting so it was ‘all hands to the pump’ to try to catch up.
The first session saw a large team of volunteers prepare the Village Square for flower planting and to patch the grassy area with new seed.
This involved a comprehensive dig around the edge of the square and the application of top-soil.
The weather was kind and thanks to the big number of people who participated the job was completed successfully in a morning.
This was followed by a major Planting and Weeding day in the River Park.
Over 20 volunteers turned out to work on this area adjacent to the famous 10-span bridge.
Many flower-beds required weeding and new flowers were planted. A new Hazel hedge was planted nearby.
Inistioge Tidy Towns organisation has thaned the volunteers who helped.
The whole project is getting great support from the local community.
Everyone was treated to refreshments in the Old Schoolhouse Café when the work was done.
Inistioge is one of two Irish representatives in the Entente Florale this year.
It has set a target of winning gold. Two towns and villages only are nominated every year to represent each participating country with Dungarvan being the other Irish entry.
Inistioge’s participation in the Entente Florale competition is being led by Inistioge Tidy Towns which acknowledges the assistance provided by Kilkenny County Council and the Department of Rural and Community Development in its preparation for the competition.
