THE LITTLE club with the big heart continues to punch above its weight.
Callan Boxing Club has had yet another young pugilist selected for an Irish international team.
Birthday boy, Curtis Darcy, a member of the club for four years, was 14 on Sunday and is looking forward to jetting to Bulgaria in three weeks with the Irish Cadet Team.
On the same team will be a talented young fighter from Paulstown Boxing Club, 13 yard old Nora Jackman.
Curtis is coached by Callan Head Coach Jimmy Walsh, John Hickey and Michael Comerford.
Two years ago, Curtis won Irish and Leinster titles at Boy 2.
His success lately continued when he won Irish and Leinster crowns at Boy 3 in the National Stadium.
Another young Callan boxer doing well is Britney Stokes who will contest the final of the Girls’ Irish Championship in the National Stadium on Sunday.
She is the holder of two Irish titles at Girl 1 and 2 and is now going for a hat trick at Girl 3.
The Callan Club has taken on a cosmopolitan character in recent times as it has welcomed young girls from across Europe who are studying in St Brigid’s College.
A group of girls returned to their home country last week, sad to be leaving but with treasured memories of an excellent Callan school and first class boxing club.
A number of young German girls are still enjoying weekly coaching sessions at the boxing club.
