IT WAS a memorable event for the greater Walsh family and their friends as they celebrated two generations of a highly respected and very popular local family.
Occasion was the 100th birthday of Dick Walsh, Church, Tullaroan and the christening of his granddaughter, Alicia Eve Walsh.
Marking the significant milestone at Newpark Hotel party on Sunday with a hale and hearty Dick was his wife, Kitty who is in her 90s and is also in great fettle.
Other members of the Walsh family present were son Richard Walsh and daughter Dorothy Tallis.
Dick was a brilliant Tullaroan hurler, playing mostly in the half back line.
He always loved the game and was delighted to win senior hurling championship honours with his parish club in 1948 and to be a selector in 1958 when Tullaroan added another title.
He also played senior hurling for Kilkenny, following in the footsteps of his great friend and neighbour, Lory Meagher.
Dick was so passionate about the game that he cycled to Killarney for the 1937 final between Tipperary and Kilkenny.
The Walsh family are admired as great neighbours and friends while Dick continues to be an aficionado of Tullaroan and Kilkenny hurling.
