KATHLYN Leahy from Glending Heights, Kilkenny City is pictured with President Michael D Higgins at which he honoured her with a civic reception for her achievement on receiving a medal of excellence in Restaurant Services at the World Skills in Abu Dhabi.
She was part of a 14-strong Irish team in different activities from which she also won Best of the Nation award from within her own camp.
She started in the hotel business with Pius Phelan at the Kilford Hotel and Glendine Inn and has since worked in Newpark Hotel, Mt Juliet and Granville Hotel, Waterford as part of her work experience from college.
Kathlyn, aged 21, is a Hotel & Hospitality Management student in Waterford IT under the guidance of Kilkenny’s Ray Cullen.

Kathlyn is daughter of Jimmy and Catherine Leahy, Glendine Heights. She has one brother, Jay.
She went to St John’s National School and then to Loreto Convent, Kilkenny City.
She is a handy golfer and was a good camogie player with O’Loughlin Gaels in her earlier years.
Kathlyn’s cousin, Richie Leahy from The Rower Inistioge is a member of the Kilkenny senior hurling squad.
Brother Jay, aged 19, plays with O’Loughlin Gaels GAA Club and in rugby his fine performance helped Kilkenny RFC to victory in the Provincial Towns Cup in Foulkstown.
Her uncle, Johnny Brennan was captain of the St Martin’s, Muckalee team that won the All-Ireland Club Senior Hurling in 1984.
She is a cousin of the former President of the Gaelic Athletic Association, Nicky Brennan.
